What is MGO?
MGO (Methylglyoxal) is a naturally occurring compound found in Manuka honey that is responsible for its remarkable antibacterial properties. Unlike regular honey, which contains hydrogen peroxide as its main antibacterial agent, Manuka honey's antibacterial activity comes primarily from MGO.
The higher the MGO number, the greater the concentration of Methylglyoxal in the honey, and the stronger its antibacterial potency. MGO ratings typically range from 30+ to over 1000+, with higher numbers indicating more potent honey.

How MGO is Formed
Manuka Nectar
Bees collect nectar from the Manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), which contains a natural compound called DHA (Dihydroxyacetone).
Natural Conversion
Over time, DHA naturally converts to MGO through a non-enzymatic process. This conversion continues even after the honey is harvested.
