UMF™ (Unique Mānuka Factor) is the grading system of the UMF Honey Association of New Zealand. An independent laboratory tests each batch for the markers of genuine Mānuka honey (leptosperin, DHA and MGO), and the grade on the jar reflects their level.
MGO (methylglyoxal) is a natural compound found in Mānuka honey and one of the markers measured for the UMF™ grade. The number on the jar is the minimum MGO content in mg per kilo: the higher the grade, the higher the MGO.
By the spoon, on toast or yoghurt, or stirred into a warm (not hot) drink. Lower grades suit everyday use; higher grades are rarer and taste more intense. Not suitable for children under 12 months.
